Teddy Douglas is an important figure in the development of the Baltimore “House” Sound. In 1985 he met Jay Steinhour and Thommy Davis who later went on to form The Basement Boys production company.
The Basement Boys have produced countless dance classics like the 1991 Gold single “Gypsy Woman” (la da dee, la da da) which has been sampled to this day by everyone from R&B Gospel duo Mary Mary, Pitbull to T.I. in 2006.
In the mid 90’s Teddy Douglas and Jay Steinhour opened Basement Boys Records. The label is responsible for club anthems from Teddy Douglas feat Francesso The Violin, Jasper St. Co. feat. Ann Nesby, Those Guys and countless others from Kenny Bobien, Taja Seville and more. In 2012 the label relaunched with Mudfoot Jones.
In Nov 2024, Teddy unveiled his first solo artist album, ‘I’m Here’, on the mighty Nervous Records. Across the 11 songs, Teddy has gone all out to deliver one of his most diverse albums to date. ‘I’m Here’ is a colourful pallet of meaningful songs and grooves that reach far beyond Teddy’s signature soulful Baltimore House sound, with added infusions of Funk, Rock and Jazz, yet still loaded with plenty of Teddy’s trademark House and Disco sounds that we all know and love.
As a solo album, there are plenty of interesting collaborations throughout. Teddy has pulled together some brilliant international vocalists in on the project including Chicago’s Hip House legend, Fast Eddie; dance music’s vocal queen, Ultra Naté; UK vocalist Pauline Taylor; Danish Folk and Blues artist, Richard Farrell; Buckshot from Blackmoon appearing as BDI Thug; and up and coming Brit Soul talent, Sipho. There are some real house stompers on here for the heads, notably ‘House Music with Fast Eddie and ‘Searching (For Your Love)’ with Ultra Naté, but plenty more besides, with a cover of Frontline Orchestra’s ‘Don’t Turn Your Back On Me’ with Pauline Taylor giving her best soulful diva performance and the downtempo rocky vibes of ‘Help!’ featuring Sipho’s emotive tones. ‘I’m Here’ is a great and unexpectedly eclectic body of work from one of Baltimore’s finest!
