Cannibal Radio brings the most explosive street party to the heart of Athens, transforming Klafthmonos Square into an open-air dancefloor. On May 10, the city's pulse beats to the rhythm of electro, house, and techno, featuring the legendary Egyptian Lover alongside two of the hottest names in the Athenian scene, Jay Jay and Maaantz.
Egyptian Lover: the legend of the Roland TR-808
Egyptian Lover is a legend in certain circles but a mystery to most – an artist deeply embedded in the West Coast hip-hop scene before the rise of gangsta rap. Born Greg Broussard, he is a rapper, DJ, and producer heavily influenced by New York’s electro scene and the electro-funk of Zapp. His music is unapologetically fun – sometimes a little corny, always explosive on the dancefloor.
While he got his start with party crew Uncle Jamm’s Army and the Radio Crew, it’s as a solo act that he made his mark. His 1984 single “Egypt, Egypt” is a defining LA anthem, and his debut On the Nile was among the first full hip-hop albums from the West Coast. Though his records arrived a few years after New York and Miami's electro scenes were already in motion, by the mid-'80s his tracks were staples for club and breakdance DJs.
Early cuts like “Computer Love” and “Dance” remain some of his most experimental, while later material leaned more into rap with added vocals and melodic hooks. Despite most of his catalog coming from that later period, it’s the early tracks that have stood the test of time – regularly cited by electro-inspired producers like Autechre and I-F.
Beyond his solo work, Broussard is a key figure in Uncle Jamm’s Army and has run several labels, including Freak Beat and Egyptian Empire. After a long hiatus, he returned with the digitally-edited Pyramix compilation and eventually dropped Back From the Tomb, featuring new material in his signature electro-funk style.
Jay Jay and Maaantz: the local heroes
Jay Jay – With a genre-bending sound that balances between house, techno, experimental beats, and melodic grooves, Jay Jay has made his mark on the Athenian club scene and beyond. He has played alongside international names like Midland, Ross From Friends, Mall Grab & Ellen Allien, always making sure to uplift the vibe and keep the crowd dancing non-stop. You can catch Jay Jay’s show Catnip on Cannibal Radio every first Tuesday of the month.
Maaantz – developed a love for electronic music at a young age, drawn to the underground scene of Athens in recent years. Active on the queer scene and refusing to be limited by a single genre, you'll catch her blending electro with trippy techno and lots of breaks. As co-host with Jipan of the monthly show "Zavolia" on Cannibal Radio, she longs for constant digging and storytelling through her sounds.
