Nextones is an international festival that promotes sonic and landscape explorations in the territory of Val D’Ossola. The beating heart of the festival is Tones Teatro Natura, a disused quarry that, thanks to an environmental redevelopment project, has been transformed into an evocative theatre with two stages immersed in the rocks, which from time to time give life to an evocative dialogue between art and landscape. Over the years, Nextones has invited leading artists from the international scene to develop immersive performances specifically conceived for Tones Teatro Natura. These include Richie Hawtin’s live performance in collaboration with visual artist Ali Demirel, Light Years by Caterina Barbieri with Bendik Giske, Nkisi and MFO, the collaboration between Alessandro Cortini and Marco Ciceri, the live AV Dostrotime Italian premiere of Squarepusher and Nicolas Jaar’s live performance for cello and electronics.
The close link with the Val d’Ossola environment is a fundamental aspect of the festival, which invites the audience to immerse themselves in its territory through a programme of site-specific experiences: these include hikes and live performances in the Orridi di Uriezzo, soundwalks to discover the mountain landscape, installations, talks and workshops designed to encourage interaction between artists, the public and the landscape. This combination of musical experimentation and immersion in nature distinguishes Nextones as a unique festival of international significance, which over the years has been able to develop an audience attentive to the issues of environmental sustainability through art and curation.
From 2019 Nextones is a co-production of Tones On The Stones Foundation and Threes Productions, two entities that since years have been active in the cultural production and share a strong ecological sensitivity.
