The Ohjo Building
Nestled in Kabukicho's neon maze, this retrofuturist monolith has been warping Tokyo's cultural fabric since 1964. What began as a home to post-war jazz cafes has evolved into one of the city's most vital spaces for underground house and techno.
The building spans several distinct zones across its industrial floors. The main room (capacity 500) features a meticulously tuned sound system that delivers pristine frequencies through perfectly positioned stacks. A network of smaller spaces, ranging from intimate 300-capacity rooms to expanded 800-capacity configurations, hosts pre-parties and afterhours sessions. Raw concrete walls create ideal acoustics for deep, hypnotic sets.
The venue's booking policy balances international talent with Tokyo's thriving local scene. Recent guests span from deep house pioneers to emerging techno experimentalists, while regular events showcase the city's growing community of producers and DJs who are pushing the boundaries of both genres.
Getting there: Five minutes from Seibu-Shinjuku Station. Look for the brutalist structure standing defiant against Kabukicho's commercial excess.
Capacity: 300-800 (multi-room)
Music Policy: House, techno, minimal
Features: High-end sound system, multiple rooms, industrial atmosphere
Marie Vaunt
Marie Vaunt is one of the biggest up-and-coming names in Techno. Based in Los Angeles, she burst onto the scene in March 2018 with her debut single, “Witchcraft,” which skyrocketed through the Beatport Techno Top 100 chart, reaching #22 within days of its release. Her next two singles, “The Coven” and “Alchemy,” achieved even greater results taking the #5 and the #14 spots respectively. Her unique production style — which delivers dark and hypnotizing synths coupled with hard, yet pristine, beats and percussive elements — has gathered a growing, dedicated, worldwide fanbase, as well as the attention of audio industry giants Arturia and PreSonus who have already taken Marie Vaunt under their wings.
