As one of the unwitting pioneers of the hyperpop movement, Longyu Gao — often referred to as ALG by friends and fans — forged a path for themselves by channeling unfiltered humor and rage into their energetic early work. The multidisciplinary artist strives to open portals to their past, present and future through their work, a nonlinear journey reflected upon in their new mini-album, Assembling symbols into my own poetry, the final chapter in their debut trilogy. Released October 23rd via ÂŁÏÇÉ THE ŁÄBĘŁ, Assembling takes the words that they’ve spent their entire career scrutinizing and throws them skyward, allowing vulnerability to take control. It’s the sound of a cup that has simply floweth over, it’s the sound of an artist who’s ready to lay it all bare in the name of love. “These songs were made when my life felt alive again. This music talks to my romantic soul, the fountain in my heart, which is where my art has come from since birth,” Longyu Gao says of the project. Much like the fountain from which it came, Assembling offers space for reflection — demolishing childhood trauma on “Little Piggy” or reaching anthemic epiphany on the Danny Brown collaboration “Bird W/O Nest” — and out flows a pure expression of the messy multiplicities that make up the human experience. ARTHRITIS KID Arthritis Kid is an Ottawa-based pop artist that stepped into the music scene mid-2020. With the influences of Coco & Clair Clair, Ashnikko, and Charli XCX, Arthritis Kid took time to cultivate her “real pop girly” image through catchy synths and tongue-in-cheek lyrics. After the release of a handful of singles and an EP in 2022, Arthritis Kid has painted the town in pink glitter with her latest EP Tear My Heart Out. In 2023 and 2024, Arthritis Kid has performed with Debaser, CRIP RAVE, Spectrasonic, and opened for My Son The Hurricane, pushing her into the spotlight as Ottawa’s new pop sensation. And while it’s been over a year since her last release, you know she’s always ready to serve up something sweet (and maybe a little sour). LOS3R Los3r is a three-piece experimental pop band from Ottawa, focusing on pushing sonic boundaries, establishing heartfelt melancholic lyrics, while maintaining a high energy.
