Rødhåd is one of modern techno’s most essential artists. The German producer and WSNWG label boss has epitomized the steely, seismic mood of our era. His earliest releases were on his Dystopian label, truly one of the most important and influential imprints and event series of the last fifteen years. In that context, Rødhåd developed the core of his musical mission: taut, granite thick but still grooving techno that commands your attention from the first second. In recent years, he’s been an avid collaborator. But even as he opens up his process to others, you can always tell when Rødhåd is at the controls. Marcel Dettmann is another titan of Berlin techno. One of the breakout Berghain residents, Dettmann’s name has become synonymous with the sound of his hometown. Few underground DJs could be considered household names, but Dettmann’s reputation and renown have made him a known concern to nearly anyone with a passing interest in techno. On his own MDR label, Dettmann has assembled a remarkable roster of artists whose commitment to pared-back, ruthlessly clear-eyed loop techno matches his own. Annie Lew is a younger disciple of this lineage. The Infra resident has absorbed and metabolized the legacy of these artists and their ilk, committing herself to world-class techno that draws on her forebears while charting her own path forward.
STUDIO resident Massimiliano Pagliara continues his reign. The Italian artist is one of house music’s greatest, of any era. His tracks flow with a jaw dropping fluidity, a seemingly effortless musicality that is genuinely captivating. Few artists know their way around a melody quite like Pagliara. His work - whether as a producer or a DJ - taps into an ascendent energy that makes the dancefloor levitate. James Axon makes his debut. The founder of LA’s queer underground party series Planet Love, Axon draws on his background as a classically-trained musician to draw out an elegant clarity in his sets. His sets vibrate with rich, colorful hues and tasteful nods to the gleaming promise of early house music. Kilopatrah Jones is one the standouts of NY’s new school. Her deep, soulful and bombastic sets are wild rides through acid-laced jacking house, sumptuous r&b, diva-led classics and more.
