The Glad Cafe presents: TENGGER

TENGGER is a traveling musical family, made up of Pan-Asian couple, itta and Marqido, who create their brand of psychedelic New-Age drone magic through the use of harmonium, voice, and toy instruments (played by itta) and analogue synths (played by Marqido). The duo originally started out with the moniker “10” but since the birth of their son RAAI (who joins them on tour and often on stage) in 2012, have called themselves TENGGER (meaning ‘unlimited expanse of sky’ in Mongolian) to mark the expansion of the family. It also means ‘huge sea’ in Hungarian. Travel, as spiritual experience in real environments, and the sound between the space and the audience have been central themes of their works. The family’s yearly pilgrimages inform every aspect of their art. TENGGER has won the 2024 Grulke Prize for Developing Non-US Act at SXSW. The SXSW Grulke Prize award, now in its tenth year, was developed in honor of our friend and colleague Creative Director Brent Grulke, who passed away on August 13, 2012. Brent’s love of music and the spirit of the festival is reflected in the three prize categories: Developing U.S. Act, Developing Non-U.S. Act, and Career Act. The Developing Act Prizes are for artists who are breaking new ground with their creativity and show the most promise in achieving their career goals. The Career Act Prize is for an established artist who appeared at SXSW to reinvent themselves or launch a new project. Past winners include Balming Tiger, Leon Bridges, Haim, Chvrches, Courtney Barnett, Jade Bird, Anderson .Paak, Jain, Dolly Parton, Iggy Pop, Damon Albarn, Spoon, The Chills, and The Flaming Lips. They were "discovered" by Moon Duo who invited them to play at Le Guess Who? in 2019, being also nominated as top 11th show from the NL media 3VOOR12.Tengger creates their brand of psychedelic New-Age drone magic through the use of Voice, Indian harmonium, and Toy instruments (played by ITTA and RAAI) and synths & electronics (played by MARQIDO). The family’s yearly pilgrimages inform every aspect of their art. The new album represents an opportunity for the globetrotting family trio to explore their origins. TENGGER means ultimate expanded sky in Mongolian. The album finds TENGGER accepting the mood of the world, using the motion of wind and waves as sonic inspiration. TENGGER’s interest in cosmology reflects in their outlook and lyrical approach. In their words “the sound starts from the breaking dawn and circulates around until the night sky and the milky way.” Opening single "PANAPTU" offers a reverent respect to "the earth and the sky", the band write. "The sun, the rain, and the things that grow on the ground make up our bodies and soul. Both can be compared to a mirror. Humanity (on the earth) looks up at the sky; the sky looks at us Illuminate each other and influence each other. Change is happening every moment."
