Habibi Funk
Berlin-based label Habibi Funk is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and as you can imagine... it's cause for celebration! For a decade, it has excelled in ‘an eclectic selection of music from the Arab world’, a motto that perfectly sums up the two precious Habibi Funk compilations.
His most memorable releases include Al Zman Saib (Arab funk with a punk edge by Moroccan singer Fadoul), Egyptian pop on Modern Music by Al Massrieen, Musique Originale De Films by Algerian composer Ahmed Malek, and of course the classic 70s tune Fine Anyway by Rogér Fakhr. With the arrival of producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Charif Megarbane, the new generation is also represented.
Rogér Fakhr (LB)
When Rogér Fakhr's Fine Anyway was released in 1977, in just 200 cassette copies, nobody could have imagined that it would exceed 25 million streams in 2025! Reissued in 2021, the album quickly established itself as Habibi Funk's bestseller, propelling Fakhr to cult icon status after decades of absence. The label literally gave it a second life.
Uncut gave the reissue a rave review ****: ‘Reference points, contemporary and subsequent, include John Prine, Gordon Lightfoot, Lee Hazlewood, Elliott Smith and Gene Clark. Crucially, Fakhr would not be out of place in their company.’
Charif Megarbane (LB)
Producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Charif Megarbane - also known as Cosmic Analog Ensemble - is a hyperactive artist. In just 10 years, he has released no fewer than 80 albums (!). His first Habibi Funk project, Marzipan (2023), is a musical journey he describes as ‘Lebrary: a vision of Lebanon and the Mediterranean expressed via the prismatic sonics of library music’. A new album by Megarbane is expected in spring 2025 on Habibi Funk.
